2013 Speaking Topics

Callahan experts will jumpstart your strategic planning session and/or conference session with insightful data and questions. Online or in-person we over a variety of topics including those listed below:

Put Big Data to Work for You

Big Data is a tool, a technique, and a resource that can be well or ill used. Most credit unions have at their fingertips all kinds of useful information, including data from the Census Bureau, as well as information on credit, transactions, demographics, spending habits, size of households, and where members spend their money.

In this presentation, Callahan will explore how credit unions can take advantage of Big Data techniques to further their mission, to attract more members, and to build stronger relationships with the members they have. In order to do so, credit unions must drop some old notions and begin to think more creatively.

A Credit Union Resurgence - Where do we go from here?

Since 2009, the credit union industry has seen double-digit growth. Performance results from 2012 clearly demonstrate these early successes were just the beginning. Membership growth accelerated in 2012, mortgage market share reached 7%, and lending activity shattered 2009's record by more than $58 billion.

These records are more than a one-time spike in activity; they are a part of an ongoing rise in credit union performance. As such, it is not rate shoppers who are driving credit union growth; rather it is consumers who are looking for a financial institution that puts their needs first. In this presentation, we'll explore the next steps credit unions can take to maintain the positive growth.

Credit Union 5.0: Survival of the Fittest

Credit unions have emerged from a four-year valley of turmoil and exceptional pressure on ROA stronger than ever. This might lead you to believe that now is a time to rest under a tree and think back on the good work we had done. Unfortunately, it isn't. We have to think about the next generation credit union and how to evolve to meet the changing needs of consumers banking habits.

In this dynamic presentation, we'll present both the concepts and the practices of leading edge credit unions that are already changing their approach to People, Data, Networks, Products, Delivery Channels, and Revenue. Join us to learn how these developments will enable credit unions to anticipate and meet the demands of society moving ever deeper into a digital and high-speed age.

6 Issues to Jump-Start Your Board's Strategic Thinking
Board members don't often have the time to read up on what's happening outside the four walls of the credit union; unfortunately, insular viewpoints make it difficult for senior management to move the credit union onto a new growth trajectory. In this session, we challenge senior management and Board volunteers to think outside the branch with provocative questions about what the future holds and how the credit union can seize new opportunities. In asking and answering these questions, we'll guide participants through the process of how to think in new ways about market opportunities and challenges.

Mortgage Backed Securities - What's Underneath the Hood?
In this interactive presentation we will compare and contrast similar MBS and CMO securities. We will look at prepayments speeds and their effects on your realized yield vs. how it compares to your book yield, why two securities that have similar characteristics can have very dissimilar yields and profiles, and what questions you should ask when presented with investment opportunities.

Know Your Clients Better Than They Know Themselves

Before you walk through the door of your client's office make sure you know the necessary key points to make a favorable impression. In this presentation you'll not only learn about performance metrics that will impress your clients but you'll also be taught how to analyze and interpret the results. To further maximize your market intelligence we'll highlight the hot issues in the credit union industry that will ensure you stand out from the competition.

A New Era of Performance Data

Across all successful organizations one common ingredient is present - the measurement of results. The importance of this is summed up in the words of noted business thinker Peter Drucker, "What gets measured, gets done."

In credit unions, however, these measurements often reflect just one dominant dimension of performance, namely, traditional financial performance data and ratios used by banks and credit unions alike for decades. In this interactive presentation about the evolving role of data and performance measurements in today's credit union movement we will discuss a new era of significant interest in "Big Data" and the increasing need to balance the traditional financial as well as the unique cooperative model.
